Michael Hayes (b. Atlanta GA, 1991) is an artist in Charleston, SC. Prior to moving to Charleston in 2014, Michael studied painting at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. With influences ranging from ancient art history to contemporary architecture and design, Michael creates densely textured compositions that are built intuitively through multiple layers of paint and careful color selections.

“Painting is a journey that exists parallel to my everyday life. It provides a way for me to process my thoughts and experiences into something tangible and permanent. It is important to me that my experience with painting feels exploratory, so I try to let each new work develop organically through an impulsive process of mark making and layering. I have found satisfaction in this spontaneous, often compulsive, method of painting. I like to think of my studio as a laboratory, where I can experiment with color, material, and composition in the pursuit of a meaningful creative experience.”
